This quote from Thomas Jefferson is engraved on the front of the bust.  In bas-relief on the back of the sculpture are three plants discovered by the expedition and documented along the Missouri River at present day Nebraska City, Nebraska.  The quote is from page 1 of the book Plants of the Lewis & Clark Expedition by H. Wayne Phillips.
